A father and daughter have died after eating wild mushrooms given to them by a family friend.

Boonpan,78,and his daughter Wijitra,40,fell ill on August 22 after eating the dish prepared by his wife with fungi given to the family by a friend.

Her father started foaming at the mouth and convulsing before he collapsed in front of relatives.

Fearing he had been poisoned, they ran to Wijitra’s locked bedroom where she was found unconscious, shortly after the meal.

Both were declared at hospital a short time later.

Wijitra’s older sister Thatsanee,49,said the family was unaware of the dangers of the mushrooms.

She and the rest of the family survived because Boonpan and Wijitra ate dinner first.

Thatsanee said: ‘My sister had never cooked with this type of mushroom before because she didn’t usually like mushrooms.

‘A friend gave her some,so she asked our mother to make them into a curry and even shared some with relatives, but they hadn’t cooked theirs yet.’

The mushrooms have now been sent for analysis.

Earlier this year, the case of a woman in Australia who was found guilty of poisoning her in-laws with death cap mushrooms gripped the world.

Erin Patterson, who was found guilty of the deaths of three people, kept a collection of books, which included recipes featuring potentially dangerous fungi.

The 50-year-old had invited her ex-husband,Simon Patterson, to their former shared home for a ‘reconciliation’ lunch with his parents,Gail and Don Patterson,on July 29,2023.

Mr Patterson’s aunt,Heather Wilkinson and her pastor husband Ian were also present as part of the church mediation.

But Simon pulled out last minute, meaning he never consumed the lethal beef Wellington pie, which was behind the deaths of both his parents and Ms Wilkinson.

Ian was the only survivor of the deadly meal.
